Narendra Modi is set to make his debut in Washington DC on September

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Washington to meet President Barack Obama in September, according to newspaper reports on Thursday, signalling a new start in ties with a leader once denied a visa by the United States.

The meeting between Modi and Obama will mean that the US view on the Indian PM has come full circle from the time it imposed a visa ban on him in 2005 in connection with the Gujarat riots three years earlier. The process of rapprochement started in February, when its recently retired ambassador to India, Nancy Powell, went to Ahmedabad to meet Modi, then a PM candidate.
As Modi became the PM, Obama vowed to work closely together with the new Indian Prime Minister "for years to come". 
Modi wants to cautiously open up the Indian economy to foreign investment to boost growth and job creation.
