About Kanyakumari:

One of the 39 Lok Sabha constituencies of Tamil Nadu, Kanyakumari Parliamentary Constituency was formed after the delimitation of 2008 and has seven segments. The Kanniyakumari Parliamentary constituency (constituency number 39) has a total of 1,178,047 electorates out of which 579,212 are females and 598,835 are males according to Election Commission of India 2009 reports.

About Kanyakumari:

The city of Kanyakumari is the southernmost part of the country’s mainland covering a total area of 26 sq kms and is at an average height of 300 metres. 

The city has a population of about 30,000 of which 10% is under six years of age. About 51% of the population is male and the sex ratio is 997 females for every 1,000 males. About 2% of the population belongs to the SC category and about 1% to the ST category. Hindus have 51% majority closely followed by Christians at 44%. Muslims, Buddhists, Sikhs, etc., also reside here. Tamil and English are the prevalent languages of the area. There are several prominent institutions in the area and the city has numerous public and private schools. Rubber, coir, wood and fruits are the primary industries in the area. Small scale steel and chemical industries can also be found here. National Highways NH-7 and NH-47 connect Kanyakumari to various other cities. In fact, NH-7 is the longest National Highway and connects it all the way to Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.
